Sex differences in the progression of CKD among older patients: Pooled analysis of 4 cohort studies
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Aug 15, 2019
Minutolo R, Gabbai FB, Chiodini P, et al. - In this pooled analysis of 4 Italian observational cohort studies, researchers focused on the link between sex and chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression among older men (n = 1,311) and older women (n = 1,024) with estimated glomerular filtration rate < 45 mL/min/1.73 m2 followed up in renal clinics. Among men and women, age, systolic blood pressure, and use of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors were similar. The participants were observed for a median duration of 4.2 years. Men exhibited higher adjusted risks for end-stage kidney disease and mortality, this finding was found to be consistent across CKD stages. Findings revealed that excess renal risk in men could be at least partially associated with higher levels of proteinuria in men vs women.
