Sex differences in faecal occult blood test screening for colorectal cancer
British Journal of Surgery Feb 22, 2019
Koskenvuo L, et al. - In this analysis of patients in a randomized population-based health services study, researchers assessed how outcomes beyond mortality are impacted with fecal occult blood test (FOBT) screening of colorectal cancer (CRC). Further, they sought to characterize potential sex differences in screening efficacy. In the Finnish FOBT screening program (2004–2011), they randomized 321,311 individuals aged 60–69 years into the screening and control arms. Of these, they analyzed 743 patients with screening-detected tumors and 617 control patients with CRC. In men, but not in women, several different outcomes were improved in correlation to biennial FOBT screening. The differences in screening efficacy between sexes could be due to the differences in incidence, symptoms and tumor location.
