Severe periodontitis is associated with myocardial infarction in females
Journal of Dental Research Jun 21, 2018
Nordendahl E, et al. - Researchers tested the presumption that there is a sex difference in the relationship between periodontitis (PD) and a first myocardial infarction (MI). When analyzing PD as a risk factor for MI, adjusting for age, smoking, diabetes, education, and marital status, logistic regression was used. Data demonstrated an association of severe PD with MI in both females and males, however after adjustments for relevant confounders, this correlation endured only in females. The evaluation of cardiovascular risk should account for poor dental health, especially in females.
