Severe hypoglycemia and cognitive function in older adults with type 1 diabetes: The Study of Longevity in Diabetes (SOLID)
Diabetes Care Jan 08, 2020
Lacy ME, et al. - Given that severe hypoglycemia (SH) was correlated with poorer cognition in children with type 1 diabetes (T1D), however, the relationship of SH with cognitive function in late life is unknown, researchers explored the link between SH and cognitive function in 718 older adults with T1D from the Study of Longevity in Diabetes (SOLID). Through linear and logistic regression models, respectively, the associations of SH with cognitive function and impaired cognition were evaluated. According to results, 32% of candidates, mean age 67.2 years, reported recent SH and 50% reported lifetime SH. Findings suggested an association of recent SH and lifetime SH with worse cognition among older adults with T1D. An association was found between recent SH and impaired global cognition. Such findings suggest that SH has a deleterious role in the brain health of older T1D patients and emphasizes the importance of SH prevention.
