Serum uric acid and cancer mortality and incidence: A systematic review and meta-analysis
European Journal of Cancer Prevention Jun 21, 2018
Dovell F, et al. - Given that elevated serum uric acid (SUA) can be associated with increased risk of cancer, researchers systematically reviewed prospective studies reporting SUA level and risk of all and specific cancers. Based on random-effects models for high vs low SUA level, as well as for an increase in 1 mg/dl SUA, a meta-analysis was also carried out. They identified 1.11 as the relative risk of all cancers for high vs low SUA level, and for a mg/dl increase in SUA level it was 1.03. For lung cancer (six risk estimates) and colon cancer (four risk estimates), they obtained comparable results. Overall, findings suggested a modest increase in overall cancer risk related to elevated SUA levels, although the formal level of statistical significance was not reached when the combined risk estimate was taken into account. Mainly negative results were found for specific cancers.
