Serum levels of neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL) predicts hemodialysis after coronary angiography in high risk patients with acute coronary syndrome

BMC Nephrology Apr 27, 2020

Reyes LF, Severiche-Bueno DF, Bustamante CA, et al. - Researchers undertook this prospective, observational analysis to examine the link of serum neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels and the requirement for hemodialysis post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). They used ELISA to ascertain NGAL levels, and collected blood samples within the first 6 h of hospital admission, as well as 12 and 24 h after contrast exposure from angiography. This study involved 45 patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) that received PCI. A high risk of developing contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) was present in all patients. Patients that needed vs did not need hemodialysis were found to have a significantly higher median (IQR) serum level of NGAL. According to the findings, a high serum level of NGAL 6 h following contrast exposure was identified as a predictor of the development of acute kidney injury requiring hemodialysis in this patient population with ACS receiving PCI; and high risk of developing CIN.
