Serum cotinine, vitamin D exposure levels and dental caries experience in U.S. adolescents

Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology Dec 21, 2018

Akinkugbe AA, et al. - Researchers studied 2579 adolescent candidates from the year 2005-2008 under the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey to analyze the independent association of serum cotinine (a marker of tobacco exposure) and serum vitamin D with dental caries. They calculated the overall median (IQR) serum cotinine level (0.15 ng/mL) associated with greater adjusted prevalence odds of possessing caries experience and the mean (SE) serum vitamin D concentration (68.2 nmol/L) indicating that serum cotinine was linked to dental caries experience and while deficient (<30 nmol/L) levels of vitamin D appear to be associated with greater prevalence odds of caries experience.
