Serum bilirubin level and its impact on the progression of chronic kidney disease
International Urology and Nephrology Aug 31, 2018
Uludag K, et al. - In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), authors evaluated if an elevated serum total bilirubin level affects the decline in renal function or new-onset chronic kidney disease (CKD). They separated the patients into three groups based on the total serum bilirubin levels viz, (G1) ranging from 0.1 to 0.3, (G2) 0.4–0.5, and (G3) 0.6–0.9 mg/dl. In patients with type 2 diabetes and preserved kidney function, the progression of CKD may be predicted by the serum bilirubin. In G1, who has the lowest serum total bilirubin levels, the highest risk of the CKD stage 3 development was noted.
