Seroprevalence and risk factors of Toxoplasma gondii among pregnant women in Adwa district, northern Ethiopia
BMC Infectious Diseases Apr 22, 2019
Teweldemedhin M, et al. - In order to ascertain the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and related factors among pregnant women in Adwa district, researchers performed a facility based cross-sectional study from January to June 2018 in Adwa district. Antibodies specific to T. gondii were identified in 128 (35.6%) of 360 pregnant women. Compared to the other regions of Ethiopia, this region showed lower seroprevalence of T. gondii among pregnant women; the seroprevalence was within the range seen in the central and East Africa region. T. gondii was observed in significant correlation with age, educational level, habit of hand washing after contact with garden soil or domestic animals, presence of domestic cat, history of contact with domestic dog and consumption of raw vegetables. They recommend making efforts in the community to generate awareness on the potential risk factors of the parasite.
