Separate and combined associations of obesity and metabolic health with coronary heart disease: A pan-European case-cohort analysis
European Heart Journal Aug 22, 2017
Lassale C, et al. – Researchers performed a large pan–European prospective study to test the notion that Âmetabolically healthy obesity implies that, in the absence of metabolic dysfunction, individuals with excess adiposity are not at greater cardiovascular risk. Findings reported that risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) was higher in metabolically unhealthy individuals, compared with their healthy counterparts, regardless of body mass index (BMI). In other words, irrespective of metabolic health, higher CHD risk was reported in overweight and obese people compared with lean people. These outcomes challenge the concept of Âmetabolically healthy obesityÂ, encouraging population–wide strategies to tackle obesity.
