Sensory Ataxia Rating Scale: Development and validation of a functional scale for patients with sensory neuronopathies
Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System Sep 22, 2019
Martinez ARM, Martins MP, Martins CR, et al. - Since there exists a lack of clinical scales that capture the whole spectrum of sensory neuronopathies (SN)-related manifestations, therefore, researchers developed as well as sought to validate a rating instrument for SN. Items to rate SN were developed by 3 experienced neuromuscular specialists. In order to assess the external validity of Sensory Ataxia Rating Scale (SEARS), comparisons were performed with scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia (SARA), Beck balance scale (BBS), and INCAT sensory sum score (ISS). A good internal consistency (standardized Cronbach's alpha of 0.83) of a 10-item scale with an intra-class correlation coefficient > 0.95 for intra- and inter-rating measurements was observed. They found that the correlation between SEARS and SARA, BBS, and ISS was moderate to good. Overall, findings revealed the reliability, feasibility, as well as the consistent nature of SEARS as a tool to rate SN.
