Second-site prosthetic joint infection in patients with multiple prosthetic joints

European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology Apr 27, 2018

Clesham K, et al. - Authors ascertained why some patients with multiple joints develop second-site infections in patients with multiple prosthetic joints. Higher morbidity and use of hospital resources were seen to have a relationship with this cohort of patients. A relationship of prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) in total knee replacements and positive MRSA status with higher rates of second infection was seen. In order to ensure that measures were taken to reduce the risks of further infection, identifying this vulnerable cohort of patients at an early stage was critical.
