Seasonal impact on surgical site infections in hip fracture surgery: Analysis of 330,803 cases using a nationwide inpatient database

Ogawa T, Yoshii T, Morishita S, et al. - This study was intended to distinguish the relationship between seasonality and surgical site infection (SSI). Researchers recruited a sum of 330,803 patients undergoing hip fracture surgery (65 years or older) using the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination database between April 1, 2011, and March 31, 2016. They examined data to ascertain the relationship between seasonality and the incidence of SSI, debridement procedure. A significant association was observed between SSI after surgery for hip fractures and seasonality. In summer, surgeries performed had the highest risk for SSI and subsequent debridement procedures.
