Screening for osteoporosis in older men: Operating characteristics of proposed strategies for selecting men for BMD testing

Journal of General Internal Medicine Aug 28, 2017

Diem SJ, et al. – This study aspired to compare the strategies for selecting older men for screening bone mineral density (BMD) testing. A moderately better performance was illustrated via Osteoporosis Self–Assessment Tool (OST) than the more complex FRAX, to screen for osteoporosis. A significant reduction was noted in the proportion of men referred for BMD testing compared to universal screening through either tool usage. The use of an OST cutoff of <2 to select men possibly led to 654 men referred for BMD testing, among whom 44 would be identified as having osteoporosis, and nine with osteoporosis would be missed.
