Saliva cotinine concentrations in pregnant women who smoke and use nicotine patches
Addiction Jul 05, 2019
Claire R, et al. - In order to know if nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) should be stopped in case of relapse to smoking in pregnant women due to concerns regarding increased exposure to nicotine, this study was undertaken using controlled pre–post design and including 268 pregnant women. From baseline to 2 weeks post-target quit date, the alterations in saliva cotinine were compared in pregnant smokers who relapsed to smoking and continued to use their patches having been assigned to use nicotine patches vs placebo. Although no change in nicotine concentration from baseline was evident in women trying to quit smoking with a nicotine patch but smoked 2 weeks post-target quit, these women smoked fewer cigarettes and had lower carbon monoxide levels.
