Safety and incidence of complications associated with bronchoscopy in an obese population
The Clinical Respiratory Journal Mar 13, 2021
Salahuddin M, Salamo O, Karanth S, et al. - This retrospective analysis was conducted to assess incidence of complications during bronchoscopy under moderate sedation among obese patients. Researchers also focused on the effect of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), body mass index (BMI) and duration of procedure. Participants were adult patients undergoing bronchoscopy, having BMI > 30 kg/m 2 . The study sample included 345 obese patients, with average BMI of 35.3 ± 5.1 kg/m 2 . The incidence of major complications and minor complications was 0.6% and 41.2%, respectively. No death was attributed to bronchoscopy. Findings indicate the safety of conducting bronchoscopy under moderate sedation in obese patients, however, elevated risk may be observed with women, increased procedure time and suspected OSA.
