Rural living environment predicts social anxiety in transgender and gender nonconforming individuals across Canada and the United States
Journal of Anxiety Disorders Jul 25, 2019
Kaplan SC, et al. - Researchers investigated how living environment (urban vs suburban vs small-town/rural) correlated to social anxiety (SA) in a sample of 902 transgender and gender nonconforming individuals who participated in the Trans Health Survey. As per the analysis of variance, there was a significant difference in SA across living environments. Rural environments vs urban environments were associated with greater SA. No correlation of living environments with a degree of social support (SS) was observed. The relationship between SS and SA moderated in correlation with living environment. In urban and suburban environments, SS was more protective against SA than rural environments.
