Rural‐urban and racial/ethnic trends and disparities in early‐onset and average‐onset colorectal cancer
Cancer Nov 02, 2020
Zahnd WE, Gomez SL, Steck SE, et al. - Via analyzing Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data on the incidence of early‐onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) (age, 20‐49 years) and average‐onset colorectal cancer (AOCRC) (age, ≥ 50 years), researchers sought to determine joint rural‐urban and racial/ethnic trends and disparities in EOCRC and AOCRC incidence rates (IRs). Findings revealed an increase in EOCRC IRs both in rural and urban populations, however, the increase was greater in rural populations. Further, there was a decrease in AOCRC rates among both rural and urban populations, however, urban populations had greater magnitude of improvement. Rural‐urban disparities were particularly notable among non‐Hispanic Black (NHB) and American Indian/Alaska Native populations.
