Risk of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy after cataract surgery
American Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 06, 2019
Yang HK, et al. - Researchers undertook this 12-year nationwide, population-based, retrospective cohort study with 1,025,340 beneficiaries in the 2002-2013 Korean National Health Insurance Service database, to know if treatment with cataract surgery is followed by an increased development of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in a large general population. In the cataract surgery group and in the non–cataract surgery group, the 10-year incidence likelihood of NAION was estimated to be 0.70% and 0.27%, respectively. Even after adjusting for demographics, comorbidities, Charlson comorbidity index, and co-medications, an increased risk of developing NAION was observed in the cataract surgery group vs the non–cataract surgery group.
