Risk of mortality in elderly COVID-19 patients with mental health disorders: A nationwide retrospective study in South Korea
The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Sep 30, 2020
Lee DY, Cho J, You SC, et al. - Using the national claims database, researchers conducted a population-based comparative cohort study investigating the different clinical features among elderly coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients with and without mental disorders in South Korea. Further, they examined if these features have a correlation with underlying mental disorders causing mortality. Among 814 identified elderly COVID-19 patients (255 [31.3%] with mental disorder and 559 [68.7%] without mental disorder), those with mental disorders were more frequently older, taking antithrombotic agents, and had diabetes, hypertension, chronic obstructive lung disease, and urinary tract infections vs those without mental disorders. Although this study did not clarify the correlation between mental disorders in elderly individuals and mortality in COVID-19, elderly patients with comorbid conditions and those taking psychiatric medications appeared to be at higher risk of COVID-19.
