Risk of ischemic stroke in thyrotoxic atrial fibrillation

Clinical Endocrinology Jul 18, 2019

Chen ZC, et al. - The risk of mortality and ischemic stroke between patients with thyrotoxic atrial fibrillation (AF), most common cardiac complication of thyrotoxicosis and is strongly implicated in thromboembolic events, and non-thyrotoxic AF was explored by researchers. From Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, 1868 subjects with the concomitant AF and thyrotoxicosis diagnoses identified between 2001 and 2010 were compared to 7472 subjects with non-thyrotoxic AF utilizing propensity score matching for age, sex, and comorbidities. Compared to patients with non-thyrotoxic AF, those with thyrotoxicosis and AF have a lower risk of stroke. Thyrotoxicosis treatment is also crucial as the prescription of anticoagulants based on CHA2DS2-VASc scores. Co-morbidities, including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and coronary artery disease, have led to all-cause mortality in non-thyrotoxic AF patients, but this impact has been decreased in thyrotoxic AF.
