Risk of ischaemic stroke associated with antiepileptic drugs: A population- based case-control study in Catalonia
BMC Neurology May 28, 2021
Giner-Soriano M, Marsal JR, Gomez-Lumbreras A, et al. - In view of the more frequent occurrence of cerebrovascular disorders in some central nervous system (CNS) disorders, such as epilepsy and the association of some CNS drugs with raised stroke risk, researchers herein investigated the risk of ischemic stroke in patients exposed to antiepileptic drugs (AED). They used the SIDIAP database to perform this population-based matched case-control study. During 2009–2014, 2,865 cases (patients with a registered diagnosis of first stroke) and 19,406 controls were exposed to AED. The most used AEDs were drugs used for conditions other than epilepsy (pregabalin, gabapentin) and both of these did not show a risk. A risk for stroke was observed in correlation with levetiracetam even when assessed in current monotherapy.
