Risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and seroprevalence for brucellosis in pregnant women exposed to goats or raw goat products in southern Thailand: A prospective cohort study
BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Apr 10, 2019
Kledmanee K, et al. - Among pregnant women, researchers assessed how a history of exposure to goats and/or raw goat products is associated with the serological status of anti-Brucella abortus immunoglobulin G (IgG) and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Further, they sought the factors linked with exposure to goats and/or raw goat products. At Songkhla province in southern Thailand, they conducted this prospective cohort study of 666 pregnant women. The majority (74.4%) of these were aged 20-34 years and were Muslim (89.2%). Exposure to goats or raw goat products was identified in 30.6%, and adverse pregnancy outcomes were reported in 17.3%. Observations revealed no association between past exposure with goats or raw goat products and adverse pregnancy outcomes; women who had positive anti-Brucella abortus IgG were more likely to have past goat exposure. They suggest that pregnant women in this area should be counseled to avoid consumption of raw goat milk to prevent goat-related infection.
