Risk for recurrent cardiovascular disease events among patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease
Cardiovascular Diabetology Mar 16, 2021
Hubbard D, Colantonio LD, Rosenson RS, et al. - Researchers sought to compare adults in the following four groups for risk for recurrent cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and all-cause death after hospital discharge for myocardial infarction (MI): (1) those with CVD before their MI without diabetes or chronic kidney disease (CKD) (referred to as prior CVD), and those without CVD before their MI who suffered from (2) diabetes but not CKD (diabetes only), (3) CKD but not diabetes (CKD only) and (4) both diabetes and CKD. There were 162,730 patients, of those, prior CVD was present in 55.2%, and diabetes only, CKD only, and both diabetes and CKD were present in 28.3%, 8.3%, and 8.2%, respectively. In patients with prior CVD, the rate for recurrent CVD events per 1000 person-years was estimated to be 135, and it was found to be 110, 124 and 171 in those with diabetes only, CKD only and both diabetes and CKD, respectively. Findings revealed that post-MI, a higher risk for recurrent CVD events was observed in adults with both diabetes and CKD vs those with prior CVD without diabetes or CKD.
