Risk factors in metabolic syndrome predicts the progression of diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice May 08, 2019

Chuang SM, et al. - In 935 patients (mean age of 64.62 years) with type 2 diabetes, researchers assessed the connection between metabolic syndrome and the progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). According to this retrospective observational cohort study, progression of albuminuria was found in 172 patients (18.4%) and deteriorated renal function in 41 patients (4.4%). For those with metabolic syndrome compared to those without metabolic syndrome, the multivariable-adjusted HR for albuminuria progression and worsened renal function was 1.65 and 2.62, respectively, after Cox regression analysis. The authors concluded that the presence of metabolic syndrome in patients with type 2 diabetes independently predicts DKD progression.
