Risk factors for transfusion-related acute lung injury
Respiratory Care Jun 01, 2021
Hu L, Wang B, Jiang Y, et al. - Researchers analyzed the literature on risk factors for transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) in critical patients. They explored the Cochrane Library, Web of Knowledge, Embase, and PubMed databases to identify the relevant studies. Inclusion criteria were fulfilled by 13 studies. Number of transfusions and units of fresh frozen plasma were identified as the risk factors that were positively correlated with TRALI. The following may represent potential risk factors for TRALI: age, female gender, tobacco use, chronic alcohol abuse, positive fluid balance, shock before transfusion, American Society of Anesthesiologists score, and mechanical ventilation. According to findings, there may exist a more crucial role of host-related risk factors in the occurrence as well as development of TRALI when compared with risk factors associated with blood transfusions.
