Risk factors for cerebrospinal fluid leak following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion
Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques Mar 07, 2019
Kapadia BH, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, 1,261,140 cases were evaluated to assess the demographic risk factors, comorbid risk factors, indications for surgery and lengths of stay in case of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). They recorded 0.24% of cases with a postoperative CSF leak. Older candidates were observed at an inclined risk of CSF leak as compared to subjects with age 40–54 years. They reported a correlation between increased risk of CSF leak and non-white race, obesity, and hypertension. Diabetes and hyperlipidemia were not found correlated with risk of CSF leak. An association of herniated disc diagnosis with reduced risk of CSF leak was noted.
