Risk and impact of herpes zoster among COPD patients: A population-based study, 2009–2014
BMC Infectious Diseases May 07, 2018
Muñoz-Quiles C, et al. - Among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the incidence of Herpes Zoster (HZ) was assessed. In addition, researchers looked for its impact on the underlying COPD. A retrospective cohort of 2,289,485 subjects (older than 49 years) was followed up between 2009 and 2014 using population and health databases of Valencia Region (Spain). The cohort included 161,317 COPD patients of which 29,708 were COPD patients with inhaled corticosteroids prescriptions (COPD-ICS). For COPD and COPD-ICS populations, HZ incidence rates were 11 and 13 cases/1000 persons-year, respectively, and the risk of HZ rose by 45% and 61%, respectively compared to non-COPD. Findings thereby suggest that the risk, severity, and impact of zoster episodes increase with the presence of COPD.
