Revisions for periprosthetic hip infections do not fail more than revisions for aseptic loosening, but mortality is higher
Journal of Arthroplasty Oct 14, 2020
Montalti M, Bordini B, Natali S, et al. - The present study was conducted to evaluate and compare survival rates, reasons for revisions, and mortality rates between these two cohorts were compared. Researchers stratified revision hips according to the reasons for revision (aseptic loosening and PHI) applying an arthroplasty registry. They recorded preoperative and intraoperative, demographic, and implant-related features. They evaluated and compared survival rates, reasons for revision, and mortality rates. Aseptic and septic revisions achieved similar outcomes at long-terms, revisions tended to fail for the same reason for revision. A higher mortality rate was found in the septic cohort. These data are beneficial to update and tune the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative managements of revisions.
