Retinal metabolic and structural alterations in response to aflibercept treatment in neovascular age-related macular degeneration
Acta Ophthalmologica Jul 14, 2019
Jakobsen DB, et al. - In this investigation involving 149 eyes, experts aspired to explore whether retinal vascular oxygen saturation and calibres could predict the initial treatment response after a loading phase of intravitreal aflibercept in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Of these, 57 treatment-naïve eyes with nAMD got three monthly injections with 2.0 mg aflibercept and subsequently stratified according to functional and structural reaction to best-corrected visual acuity and macular retinal thickness development. Investigators found that nAMD and dry AMD patients had higher retinal arteriolar oxygen saturation than normal eyes. Findings suggested that changes in retinal venular oxygen saturation are independently associated with initial treatment response in nAMD, but pre-treatment functional and structural retinal measurements could not predict the response of the treatment.
