Response to laser treatment of café au lait macules based on morphologic features
JAMA Dermatology Sep 04, 2017
Belkin DA, et al. – The assumption investigated here was that irregularly bordered café au lait macules (CALMs) of the Âcoast of Maine subtype responded better to therapy when compared to those of the smooth–bordered Âcoast of California subtype. The data revealed that CALMs with jagged or ill–defined borders of the coast of Maine subtype tend to responded well to laser treatment. In contrast, those with smooth and well–defined borders of the coast of California subtype displayed poor response. Clinicians using Q–switched or picosecond lasers to treat CALMs were recommended to use morphologic characteristics. This would aid in speculating the response and yield a more effective management of the patients' expectations.
