Relationship of toothbrushing to metabolic syndrome in middle-aged adults
Journal of Clinical Periodontology Jun 01, 2018
Tanaka A, et al. - Researchers ascertained the impact of toothbrushing on the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS), including evaluation of periodontal status, in middle-aged adults. They assessed the toothbrushing frequency using a questionnaire. They defined the periodontal disease as having at least one site with a pocket depth of ≥4 mm. Obesity, elevated triglycerides, blood pressure, fasting glucose and reduced high-density lipoprotein were included in the metabolic components. Findings suggested an association of frequent daily toothbrushing with a lower risk of development of MetS.
