Relationship between varus thrust during gait and low back pain in people with knee osteoarthritis
Arthritis Care & Research Jul 04, 2019
Iijima H, et al. - Via a gait observation in 205 people with knee osteoarthritis (OA), the researchers assessed the hypothesis that varus thrust visualized during gait was linked to a higher prevalence of low back pain (LBP) in individuals with knee OA. Varus thrust in the painful knee was observed in 45 individuals, in whom 31 had any LBP and 18 had moderate to severe LBP. A 3.6-fold greater risk of the presence of moderate to severe LBP was exhibited by varus thrust patients. Also, the presence of varus thrust was correlated with more severe LBP intensity in LBP patients. Hence, the unique relationship between varus thrust and LBP was concluded by this study, which promoted the idea of a biomechanical link, the so-called knee–spine syndrome. Also, for explaining the pathogenesis of knee OA–related LBP, these findings presented an insight.
