Relationship between the burden of major periodontal bacteria and serum lipid profile in a cross-sectional Japanese study
BMC Oral Health May 16, 2018
Choi YH, et al. - Experts evaluated the association between the prevalence and total burden of periodontal bacteria and serum lipid profile. They collected saliva from enrolled participants to detect 4 major periodontal bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, and Prevotella intermedia) using Polymerase Chain Reaction method. As per data, in lowering serum HDL level independent involvement of periodontal bacterial burden was suggested. For predicting the risk of HDL metabolism dysregulation, bacterial tests in a clinical setting could be a useful approach.
