Relationship between HbA1c and all-cause mortality in older patients with insulin-treated type 2 diabetes: Results of a large UK Cohort Study
Age and Aging Jan 11, 2019
Anyanwagu U, et al. - Researchers examined the associations between HbA1c and cardiovascular morbidity and all-cause mortality in older insulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes after adjustment for multiple confounders. Through the Health Improvement Network (THIN) database, data for 4,589 adults with type 2 diabetes (aged > 65 years) on insulin treatment were sourced from 532 UK General Practices. In older patients with insulin-treated type 2 diabetes, both low and high HbA1c were associated with increased all-cause mortality. In this cohort study, the need for individualized care was supported, and suggested better results with HbA1c levels of 6.5% to 7.4%, with a markedly excess risk with HbA1c > 11%.
