Relationship between handgrip strength and pulmonary function in apparently healthy older women
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society May 29, 2018
Son DH, et al. - Researchers studied the link between handgrip strength and pulmonary function in this cross-sectional study of a representative sample of older Korean women who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Community-dwelling women aged 65 and older without chronic diseases or pulmonary disease were examined for handgrip strength and pulmonary function according to guidelines of the American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society using a spirometry system. In a dose-dependent manner, a positive association of handgrip strength with pulmonary function was found. Given the health implications of pulmonary function, it may be useful to timely detect weaker handgrip strength in older people for evaluating potential pulmonary function impairment.
