Relationship between grip strength and prediabetes in a large-scale adult population
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Apr 25, 2019
Hu S, et al. - In a large-scale adult population (n=27,295; aged 20-90 years) from the 2013–2016 Tianjin Chronic Low-grade Systemic Inflammation and Health Cohort Study, researchers investigated if grip strength is associated with prediabetes via multiple logistic regression analysis. They determined grip strength by using an electronic hand-grip dynamometer and the greatest force was normalized to body weight. Using the American Diabetes Association criteria, they diagnosed prediabetes. Findings revealed an independent association of increased grip strength with lower prevalence of prediabetes in Chinese adults. This was suggestive of a possible utility of grip strength as a marker for screening subjects at risk for developing prediabetes.
