Relation of biomarkers of cardiac injury, stress, and fibrosis with cardiac mechanics in patients ≥ 65 years of age

The American Journal of Cardiology Oct 09, 2020

Gottdiener JS, Seliger S, deFilippi C, et al. - Among older patients (≥ 65 years of age) without cardiovascular disease, low ejection fraction, or wall motion abnormalities, this cross-sectional study was undertaken to determine the links of biomarkers of cardiac injury, stress, myocardial stretch, and fibrosis [high sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hscTnT), soluble ST2 (sST2), N-terminal B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and galectin-3] with cardiac mechanics derived from speckle tracking echocardiography. Worse left ventricular longitudinal strain was observed in relation to hscTnT, sST2, and NT-proBNP among these participants. Also, HscTnT and NT-proBNP were identified to be related to worse left atrial reservoir strain. Overall, it was inferred that pre-clinical heart failure may be represented by these subclinical rises in blood biomarkers and their links with subtle diastolic and systolic dysfunction.
