Reduction in HbA1c with exercise videogames among participants with elevated HbA1c: Secondary analysis of the Wii Heart Fitness trial
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jun 28, 2019
Bock BC, et al. - Since exercise videogames (EVGs) may be an attractive alternative for people who have not found standard exercise modalities appealing, researchers sought to explore the impacts of 12 weeks of EVGs vs standard exercise (eg, treadmill, cycling) and control condition among people with elevated HbA1c (100% prediabetic). The study sample consisted of 84 participants (averaged age 51.4 years). EVG participants showed an average 2% decrease in HbA1c at week 12 compared to a 0.6% decrease in Standard and Control groups. EVG participants were significantly more involved in MVPA than Standard and Controls, had reduced LDL cholesterol and trends suggesting reduced body fat. Compared to other participants, EVG participants reported higher exercise enjoyment and motivation. Overall, the authors suggested that EVGs may be an attractive and effective tool for improving blood glucose management that may help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes among prediabetes patients.
