Rate and predictors of 30-day readmission following diabetic ketoacidosis in type 1 diabetes mellitus: A US analysis
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Jun 04, 2021
Shaka H, Aguilera M, Aucar M, et al. - Researchers used the 2018 Nationwide Readmission Database to determine rates as well as features of non-elective 30-day readmission in adult patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1DM) hospitalized for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). They also explored the predictors of readmission. ICD-10-CM codes were applied to classify DKA hospitalizations in patients with T1DM. For DKA, a 30-day all-cause readmission rate of 19.4% was estimated. Findings revealed a high readmission rate for DKA in T1DM patients, and the principal diagnosis on readmission was DKA in the majority of the patients. The significant predictors of readmission included a Charlson Comorbidity Index equal to or greater than 3, hypertension, female gender, and being discharged against medical advice.
