Randomized controlled trial of polyethylene glycol vs lactulose for the treatment of overt hepatic encephalopathy
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Nov 11, 2018
Shehata HH, et al. - In the management of hepatic encephalopathy (HE), researchers tested the effectiveness and safety of polyethylene glycol (PEG) vs lactulose. One hundred patients with post-hepatitis C cirrhosis who were admitted with HE were included in this clinical trial. Before and 24 hours after administration of the drug, the clinico-epidemiological characteristics of patients, Child–Pugh score, and HE scoring algorithm were recorded. Findings revealed that, in the treatment of HE, lactulose and PEG were safe and efficacious. As per data, both lactulose and PEG were tolerated, and no significant adverse events were documented. Compared to lactulose group, the time needed for resolution of HE and length of hospital stay were significantly lower in PEG group.
