Radiation exposure from pediatric CT scans and subsequent cancer risk in the Netherlands
Journal of the National Cancer Institute Jul 31, 2018
Meulepas JM, et al. - In order to assess the risk of leukemia and brain tumor after exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation from computed tomography (CT) scans in childhood, researchers performed a nationwide retrospective cohort study including 168,394 children younger than age 18 years who received one or more CT scans in a Dutch hospital between 1979 and 2012. Observations suggested an increased brain tumor risk among those who had CT-related radiation exposure. The exposure was not found to be associated with leukemia. The cohort of children with CT scans showed a higher incidence of brain tumors vs the general population.
