Racial disparities in total knee replacement failure are not explained by poverty
Arthritis Care & Research Jul 20, 2019
Bass AR, et al. - Black and white New York State 4,062 citizens, who underwent primary unilateral total knee replacement (TKR) were recruited in a prospective single-institution TKR registry by the researchers to discover whether racial disparities in TKR failure were justified by poverty. In blacks than whites, TKR revision risk was greater, however, in multivariable analysis, only younger age, male sex, and constrained prosthesis were observed top be the predictors of TKR revision. With 2-year surveys, TKR failure was noted in 200/2,832 subjects. Non-osteoarthritis TKR implication, low surgeon volume, and low HSS Expectations Survey score were the risk factors for TKR failure, and not the black race. Community poverty had no correlation with TKR revision or failure. Hence, a trend towards greater TKR revision risk in blacks was concluded, however, poverty did not alter the association among race and TKR revision or failure.
