Bray MJC, Daneshvari NO, Radhakrishnan I, et al. - The virologic and socioeconomic consequences of COVID-19 are disproportionately observed among African American individuals, with probable implications for mental health. Researchers hypothesized increased suicide mortality among Black residents of Maryland during COVID-19 crisis periods. Researchers used comprehensive chief medical examiner records for suicide deaths to extract race/ethnicity and date of death for 1,079 suicide decedents from January 1, 2017 to July 7, 2020. They focused on period 1 (January 1, 2020 to March 4, 2020 [pre–COVID-19]); period 2 (March 5, 2020 to May 7, 2020 [progressive closure]); and period 3 (May 8, 2020 to July 7, 2020 [progressive reopening]). Suicide trends were characterized according to race/ethnicity during COVID-19 for the first time, highlighting the relevance of timely recognition of high-risk groups. Findings overall suggest that during the pandemic, suicide trends changed with opposite effects noted between Black and White residents of Maryland. During period 2, suicide mortality appeared to double among Black residents, compared with the means in 2017 to 2019. In contrast, White residents seemed to have nearly halved suicide mortality during periods 2 and 3 compared with the means of 2017 to 2019. No substantial change in population sizes was noted between 2017 and 2019.
