Quantifying cognitive dysfunction across the spectrum of end stage kidney disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Nephrology Aug 17, 2018

Vanderlinden JA, et al. - In this review, researchers characterized the neurocognitive testing used in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients and determined to what degree cognitive dysfunction is reported by analyzing published articles on pre-dialysis patients, hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, or renal transplant recipients. All study designs and articles from 1980 until May 2018 were included. The meta-analysis included 148 articles. Findings revealed the likeliness of CKD patients, especially pre-dialysis and those requiring dialysis, to demonstrate impairments in cognition that could be detected with specific screening neuropsychological assessments, like The Mini–Mental State Examination, The Modified Mini–Mental State Examination, the Trails Making Tests forms A and B, and components of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale: Digit Span and Digit Symbol.
