Quantification of fluid resolution and visual acuity gain in patients with diabetic macular edema using deep learning: A post hoc analysis of a randomized clinical trial
JAMA Ophthalmology Sep 16, 2020
Roberts PK, Vogl WD, Gerendas BS, et al. - In this post hoc analysis of a randomized clinical trial in which intraretinal and subretinal fluid was quantified using a fully automated algorithm, researchers sought to investigate the volumetric change of intraretinal fluid (IRF) and subretinal fluid (SRF) in diabetic macular edema (DME) during anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment. Among the 570 study candidates (302 [53%] male; 369 [65%] white; mean [SD] age, 43.4 [12.6] years), the mean fluid volumes in the central 3 mm were 448.6 nL of IRF and 36.9 nL of SRF at baseline and 161.2 nL of IRF and 4.4 nL of SRF at 12 months. Automated fluid segmentation in DME has shown that the presence of SRF has been correlated with lower baseline BCVA but with a good response to anti-vascular growth factor therapy. These automated spectral-domain optical coherence tomographic analyses can be clinically used during therapy to determine anatomical changes.
