Pulmonary sequestration in adults: A retrospective review of resected and unresected cases
BMC Pulmonary Medicine Jun 13, 2018
Alsumrain M, et al. - Researchers analyzed data for adult patients with pulmonary sequestration (PS; a form of congenital pulmonary malformation) in order to determine the clinical presentation and course of this entity during adulthood. Cases diagnosed between 1997 and 2016 were selected via a computer-assisted search of Mayo clinic medical records. A total of 32 adult patients with PS were identified, in whom 42 years was the median age at diagnosis and males comprised 17 patients (53%). They found no relevant symptoms in approximately one-half of adult patients with PS. The factors that were required to be weighed concerning the decision regarding surgical resection included clinical manifestations related to PS, risk of surgical complications, comorbidities, and individual patient preferences.
