Pulmonary hypertension subtypes and mortality in CKD
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Nov 21, 2019
Edmonston DL, Parikh KS, Rajagopal S, et al. - Researchers undertook this observational retrospective cohort analysis, to estimate the prevalence as well as the results of pulmonary hypertension (PH) subtypes in the setting of chronic kidney disease (CKD). From the Duke Databank for Cardiovascular Disease, they selected and analyzed 12,618 patients with right heart catheterization from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2014. The presence of PH was found in 73.4% of patients with CKD vs 56.9% of patients without CKD. Among those without CKD, the highest mortality risk was observed in relation to the presence of precapillary PH vs those without PH. Overall, a common prevalence of PH was observed among patients with CKD referred for right heart catheterization. In these patients, poor survival was observed in relation to PH. Also, a common prevalence of combined pre- and postcapillary PH was reported. Worst survival for patients with CKD was portended by combined pre- and postcapillary PH.
