Pulmonary arterial capacitance predicts outcomes in patients with pulmonary hypertension independent of race/ethnicity, gender, and etiology
Respiratory Medicine Feb 11, 2020
Mayfield JJ, et al. - Given the strong predictive value of pulmonary arterial capacitance (PAC) for outcomes in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH), researchers here investigated its value across subgroups of race/ethnicity, gender, and PH etiologies. In this retrospective study, they assessed 270 patients (median age: 56 years; 67% females) who were diagnosed with PH and were managed at the Pulmonary Hypertension Comprehensive Care Center of a tertiary care hospital. Outcomes revealed a significant association of decreased PAC with mortality and hospitalization in PH patients; this was observed independent of race, gender, and PH subgroups. A significant independent association with increased hospitalizations was observed in Hispanic patients, and a trend toward increased all-cause mortality was identified in African Americans. More frequent hospitalization was reported in correlation with WHO group 2 PH.
