Psychological treatments for depression among women experiencing intimate partner violence: Findings from a randomized controlled trial for behavioral activation in Goa, India
Archives of Women's Mental Health Aug 04, 2019
Patel AR, Weobong B, Patel VH, et al. - Researchers examined if the Healthy Activity Program (HAP), a culturally adapted behavioral activation treatment, vs enhanced usual care (EUC) may benefit women experiencing Intimate partner violence (IPV) in Goa, India. In cross-sectional analyses, participants experiencing IPV vs those who did not experience IPV had significantly lower activation levels and higher depressive symptoms at 3 and 12 months. Correspondingly, IPV endorsement at 3 months was identified to be a significant predictor of depressive symptoms at 12 months. However, less severe depressive symptoms were evident at 12 months in significant correlation with activation; HAP participants displayed this regardless of IPV endorsement. IPV remained the only significant predictor of depressive symptoms at 12 months among EUC participants. As per these results, behavioral activation can still benefit women experiencing IPV.
